About Surf Ballroom

Where TheMusic Lives

The Surf Ballroom is more than a music venue — it’s a living legend. Located in Clear Lake, Iowa, the Surf has been a cornerstone of American music history since 1948. Best known as the final stage for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, the Surf continues to honor their legacy while inspiring new generations of artists and fans.

Designated a National Historic Landmark, the Surf Ballroom still echoes with the sounds of rock ‘n’ roll, swing, country, and contemporary music. With its original 1950s charm, iconic dance floor, and deep cultural roots, it serves as both a time capsule and a vibrant gathering place. Whether you’re here for a concert, an immersive experience, or a walk through history, the Surf invites you to be part of a story that continues to unfold.

Surf Ballroom History

The Surf Ballroom is an American cultural icon with a story as legendary as the music that’s fills its stage. Original owner and designer Carl Fox envisioned a venue that felt like a tropical getaway—an ocean beach club right in the heart of Iowa. His love for entertaining quickly made the Surf a premier stop for top big bands of the day, including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and The Dorseys.

By the 1950s, the Surf was one of the first venues in the Midwest to embrace the rise of rock ‘n’ roll, adapting to the times with “modern music and dancing” Thursday through Saturday nights. Early legends like Little Richard and The Everly Brothers helped solidify the Surf as a must-play destination for rock ‘n’ roll pioneers—culminating in one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most famous shows: the Winter Dance Party on February 2, 1959.

Since that fateful night, the Surf has remained a legendary venue for artists across every genre—hosting Roy Orbison, Santana, REO Speedwagon, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, ZZ Top, Martina McBride, Robert Plant, and many more.

The Surf Ballroom remains a place where legends are honored, new music is celebrated, and the story of American music continues to unfold.
