LECTURE: "TEEN BANDS AND TEEN DANCES AT THE SURF"

Time: 11:00am-12:30pm
Location:
Clear Lake Public Library, 200 North 4th Street, Clear Lake
Event Description:  Three years before the first rock concert was heard at the Surf in July of 1956, manager Carroll Anderson realized how important this new demographic was going to be an important part of the future for the ballroom.  In July of 1953, “Teen Dances” were introduced, letting teenagers come to the venue as patrons in their own right.  Anderson knew that parents would be wary of their children gathering together alone, so in addition to the fifty cents charge for youth, the adults were encouraged to show up for free.  The first dance was played by the Henry Charles Orchestra, a band that regularly played during Saturday nights for adult audiences.  But after Bill Haley made his rockin’ presence known at the Surf, the dances took on a whole new sound.  Despite the regular influx of national names like Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and the Beach Boys, the most regular performers of rock music at the Surf were just kids themselves.  Usually backed by KRIB DJs, bands such as Jim Johnson and the Rock-a-beats, Eddie Randall and the Downbeats, Keith Zeller and the Starliners, and Johnny and the Galaxies rocked the night away with the same kind of rhythmic excitement that teens were used to hearing elsewhere.   The culture of teen dances, the impact on life at the Surf, and why the local teen bands were equally as important to the development of rock as their famous counterparts will be discussed during this lecture presented by volunteer Historian, Jonas Westover.
Admission: Donations to the Surf Ballroom History Project accepted, open to general public.
