Surf Ballroom Offers Fun and Exciting Summer Programs

Rockin' Tots

Our most popular class! This class is for parents/grandparents/caregivers and tots who are walking through age 5. Experience the historic Surf Ballroom by rockin’ through themed lessons which includes storytime, music, movement and instruments. Join the fun, you’re never too young or old to Rock n Roll!

Ages: Walking-5 years old
Time: 9:30-10:15am
Session 1: June 10, 17, and July 1st, 2019
Session 2: July 8, 15, and 22, 2019
Fee: $5 per class, or $15 per session


Creative Zone-Adorn a Microphone

Kelsea Ballerini, Miranda Lambert and Katy Perry are among scores of artists who have been known to use a flashy microphone in their stage shows. Make your own microphone design, drawing inspiration by music superstars new and old. Channel your inner rock star to create an inventive mic using color, gems, sequins and your own creativity. When finished, strike a pose on the Surf Ballroom stage and snap your own photo.

Creative Zone-Puppet Making

Make your own puppet and put together a mini-show with your new friends! We'll provide materials, you bring inspiration and creativity! Will you make a Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Big Bopper or 50s inspired puppet? It's up to you!

Creative Zone-Embellished Instruments

Young designers will personalize paper guitar designs inspired by the stylized guitars on display throughout the museum. Unique pieces on display include Buddy Guy's polka dot Fender guitar, Vince Neil's signature dragon guitar, Neal McCoy's American flag guitar and Little Big Town's light blue Fender Stratocaster guitar among many others.

Creative Zone-Design a Concert Poster

Concert poster art can be as memorable and significant as the music it represents. An eye-catching poster grabs fans' attention and makes a statement about the music and the artist before a note is heard. In this hands-on workshop, young artists will create original concert poster art inspired by artifacts and Winter Dance Party posters from the museum's collection and by objects on display.

Summer Reading 2019

Visit your local library and check out some of their music themed books. Summer reading partners for 2019 include the Clear Lake Public Library and the Garner Public Library. Iowa readers who complete summer reading through their local library are eligible for a 2019 Surf Ballroom and Museum summer reading button as well as other prizes!
