DANCE LESSONS:

Event Description: Dance instructors Amy Hopkins and friends will host 50's style dance lessons. They will review dance styles taught in previous years and introduce new ones-there will be lessons for singles and couples alike!

WINTER SCHOOL DANCE PARTY:

Description: Enjoy great live entertainment by "Buddy’s Buddies" while raising money for a good cause. All admissions support the Winter Dance Party Scholarships & Awards Program, a program designed to commemorate the lives and contributions of J.P. Richardson, Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly. Awards are given annually to graduating high school students from four schools in Iowa and one in Texas who will be enrolling in a college or university as a Music Major.

Event Description: Annual show that features programming designed for Kindergarten through 5th grade students including Winter Dance Party and rock 'n roll history, live music and dancing.

ROCKIN' THE ART OF THE 50s & 60s:

Time: 11:00am; 1:00pm & 2:00pm
Location: MacNider Art Museum, 303-2nd Street SE, Mason City
Event Description: What was going on in the art world while Buddy Holly and friends were tearing up the music world? One of the strengths of the MacNider Museum's American art collection is the art of the second half of the twentieth century. Head on over to Mason City for a free guided tour of the art of the 50s and 60s and see what Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and puppeteer Bil Baird were creating. And don't forget the ladies! They have work by Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler too!

27th ANNUAL BRITISH BUDDY HOLLY SOCIETY LUNCHEON:

AN APPROACH TO VENUE-CENTRIC HISTORY: THE 1950S AT THE SURF BALLROOM:

Clear Lake Public Library, 200 North 4th Street, Clear Lake
Description:
 The defining event for the Surf Ballroom was the tragedy that followed the Winter Dance Party of 1959, and with it, the Surf became a legendary part of the international music scene. But for people in North Iowa, the Surf held a different meaning as a center for cultural and civic events-a role it espoused even when it opened in 1933. This lecture will provide a larger history of the Surf during the 1950s, pinpointing several events that made it an ideal (if last minute) location for Buddy Holly's tour.

MEMORIAL SITE TOUR:

Time: 10:00am
Location: Motorcoach departs from Surf Ballroom Lobby
Event Description: Escorted tour via motorcoach to the farm field north of Clear Lake, IA where the ill fated airplane came to rest. Tour length: 75-90 minutes. Video presentation en route to memorial site is included. Visitors are encourage to dress in warm layers-a 1/4 mile walk is required to see the memorial site!
Tickets: $8.00/person (Available at Surf ticket office)

FILM PRESENTATION OF "THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY":

 This 1978 biographical film tells the life story of rock musician Buddy Holly. It features an Acadamy Award-winning musical score, adapted by Joe Renzetti and Oscar-nominated lead performance by Gary Busey. Cash bar available.

KRIB RECORD HOP & 50's LUNCHEON:

Time: 11:00am-3:00pm
Entertainment:
Enjoy a 50's style luncheon at the Best Western's Diamond Ballroom with a record hop with all of the sounds of the 50's from 11am-1pm followed by live music by Denny & The DC Drifters from 1-3pm.  Hamburgers, french fries, cole slaw and a beverage make it a perfectly rockin' afternoon! Bring your dancing shoes, there's always room to dance!

Additionally, event guests will enjoy live performances by Wanda Jackson, Jason D. Williams and Ricky Nelson Remembered featuring Matthew & Gunnar Nelson.
